Let Me Entertain You

I understand that Michael Jackson was a huge entertainment star but I was astounded that apparently little else of importance  has happened in the world except his death.  That the TV evening news and subsequent programing were dominated by Jackson on Thursday evening was not astounding, it was after all breaking news then,  but when almost the  entire Friday evening news(????) reporting on ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox were devoted to Jackson on Friday it was just plain mind boggling.

As far as I can tell this man was not a national hero, not a distinguished statesman, not a great humanitarian, not an exceptional literary figure, not an acclaimed painter, sculptor, architect  not a groundbreaking scientist or inventor, neither  an evangelist of renown or  a  theological leader, not a thinker of  exquisite philosophy,  nor anything other type of  ‘person of great note’  who could  have commanded this type of media adulation as little as 10 years ago.

What does this say about the world we live in?

Let me entertain you.

Wow! You said exactly what I thought. I simply didn’t know that this was you. I’m going to have to keep up with you better.

I read your book review and kept reading. I am disgruntled with the media, especially as far as television goes. It seems like television would be the easiest way to get the news, but it’s so watered down and filled with trivial information. None of it is worth watching. It seems like TV news programs are afraid to have real opinions for fear of being ridiculed. I have to hunt and pick through websites to really have a grasp on the goings on of the world; not as easy as having it right there on a TV screen so that I can do other things while watching the news. No wonder so many people are ignorant of the world around them.
